We are interested in environmental problems and neglect, but also in simple human encounters, and what can happen when we bring our bodies and our attention into a place.
Simple Humans: Conversations with Machines and Ourselves
Recently, we humans have become increasingly aware of the impact of computing machines on our lives — from advice that helps solve problems to tasks assigned to us that contribute to the further development of machines.
With support from GES, Grace Exhibition Space, recent developments around the non-machines framework will be presented alongside the introduction of the association and its open call for simple humans: people who raise questions, remain open to knowledge and learning, stay receptive to change, and develop practical and philosophical responses. OPEN CALL LINK Their practices include, but are not limited to, exploring our relations with machines, maintaining connections with the wider environment, and developing artistic and research practices across disciplines.
Rather than simply presenting the framework, the event will take the form of a walking conversation with machines, and ourselves. The public will be invited to participate in an exercise designed to stretch the abilities — and perhaps the limits — of a simple human.
Non-machines began three years ago as a conference and exhibition, Non-Machines: Playground of Perspectives, at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, establishing the conceptual framework around non-machines. Today, the framework has developed into a solid foundation for artistic works, theoretical inquiry, and platforms for artistic research.
Lia Giannakou is a performer, activist, and visual artist. She graduated from the Drama School of the National Theatre of Northern Greece. Her work raises questions about what it means to be human and is inspired by collective artistic practices. She developed Constructualism, an approach to human presence across the arts and diverse ecosystems. She is a co-founder of the Centre for Non-Machines Research.
Mindaugas Gapševičius is an artist investigating dynamic relationships between humans and their environments. He earned an MA from the Vilnius Academy of Arts in 1999, an MPhil from Goldsmiths, University of London, in 2016, and completed his PhD at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar in 2022. He is a co-founder of the Centre for Non-Machines Research.
